Students are quite confused and some of them desperately keep looking in google by typing rather meaning in Hindi, Rather sentences, and other things; however, they do not get good clarity when it comes to using Rather, Rather than, Would rather, Would be rather-than, Would rather have, and Would have rather. Therefore, today, we’re going to learn all concepts of Rather and its usage in sentences in order to have better clarity.

(1) Rather (to emphasize the main verb) – बल्की/उल्टा (unexpected)

Rather का use main verb को emphasize करने के लिए किया जाता है। इस case में हम main verb के ठीक पहले rather का use करते हैं जिससे हमें बल्की या उल्टा का sense आता है जो की काफ़ी unexpected होता है।

Example

  • Rohit – Don’t visit his website. There are no good contents over there.
    Rahul – I rather love visiting his website. There are lots of useful pieces of stuff of English to learn from there.
  • रोहित – उसकी वेबसाइट पर मत जाओ। वहाँ पर कोई अच्छी contents नहीं है।
    राहुल – मुझे बल्की उसकी वेबसाइट पर जाना अच्छा लगता है। बहुत सारी उपयोगी अंग्रेजी के चीजें हैं, वहां से सीखने के लिए।
  • Priya – I don’t want to attend her birthday party because we had a fight last day.
    Pushpa – Don’t think this much. As soon as you go there, She will rather welcome you.
  • प्रिया – मैं उसकी बर्थडे पार्टी में नहीं जाना चाहती क्योंकि पिछले दिन हमारा झगड़ा हुआ था।
    पुष्पा – इतना मत सोचो। जैसे ही आप वहां जाएंगे, वह उल्टा/बल्की आपका स्वागत करेगी।
  • Rajesh: let’s play football.
    Rakesh: No, we’ll rather play cricket.
  • राजेश: चलो फुटबॉल खेलते हैं।
    राकेश: नहीं, हम बल्कि क्रिकेट खेलेंगे।

(2) Or rather/ Rather – बल्की (to correct ourselves)

  • He is a teacher, or rather an English teacher.
    वह एक शिक्षक है, बल्कि एक अंग्रेजी शिक्षक है।
  • My father is an Engineer, (or) rather a mechanical engineer.
    मेरे पिता एक इंजीनियर हैं, बल्कि एक मैकेनिकल इंजीनियर हैं।
  • He picked her up in his car, or rather in his father’s car.
    उसने उसे अपनी कार में, बल्कि अपने पिता की कार में ले गया।
  • I can speak some languages, rather 5 languages.
    मैं कुछ भाषाएं बोल सकता हूं, बल्कि 5 भाषाएं बोल सकता हूं।

Note:
इस sense में आप Rather के जगह पे or Rather का या Or rather के जगह पे Rather का
use कर सकते हैं।

(3) Rather than + V4/Obj – बजाय इसके ( choice/preference)

Choice या Preference के case में Rather than का use करते हैं और इसके साथ हम verb की -ing फॉर्म का या कोई objective form का use करते हैं।

E.g.

  • I work on my project, rather than watching entertaining videos.
    Or, I rather work on my project than watching entertaining videos.
    मैं मनोरंजक वीडियो देखने के बजाय अपने प्रोजेक्ट पर काम करता हूं।
  • I will learn Spanish, rather than learning French.
    Or, I will rather learn Spanish than learning French.
    Or, I will rather learn Spanish than French.
    मैं फ्रेंच सीखने के बजाय स्पेनिश सीखूंगा।

Note : Verb “Learn” के repeatition को रोकने के लिए आप इसे दूसरे clause से हटा सकते हैं।

  • We read blogs on hindiseenglh.com, rather than reading on any other website.
    Or, We rather read blogs on hindiseenglh.com than reading on any other website.
    Or, We rather read blogs on hindiseenglh.com than on any other website.
    हम किसी अन्य वेबसाइट पर पढ़ने के बजाय hindiseenglh.com पर ब्लॉग पढ़ते हैं।

 

Note : Verb “Read” के repeatition को रोकने के लिए आप इसे दूसरे clause से हटा सकते हैं।

  • I love eating (having) fruits, rather than eating (having) vegetables.
    Or, I rather love eating (having) fruits than eating (having) vegetables.
    Or, I rather love eating (having) fruits than vegetables.
    मुझे सब्जियां खाने के बजाय फल खाना पसंद है।

(4) would like to, rather than – would rather, than (choice/preference)

  • I would like to drink milk, rather than juice.
    Or, I would rather drink milk than juice.
    मैं जूस पीने के बजाय दूध पीना पसंद करूंगा।
  • I would like to buy a pen, rather than buying a book.
    Or, I would rather like to buy a pen than buying a book.
    Or, I would rather buy a pen than a book.
    मैं किताब खरीदने के बजाय कलम खरीदना पसंद करूंगा।
  • I would like to watch some motivational videos, rather than chatting with you.
    Or, I would rather like to watch some motivational videos than chatting with you.
    Or, I would rather watch some motivational videos than chatting with you.
    मैं आपके साथ चैट करने के बजाय कुछ motivational videos देखना पसंद करूंगा।

(5) would rather + V1 ( बजाय होता)

  • I would go to Ranchi, rather than going to Patna
    Or, I would rather go to Ranchi than Patna.
    मैं बल्की पटना के बजाय रांची जाता।
  • I would become an engineer, rather than (becoming) a teacher.
    Or, I would rather become an engineer than a teacher.
    में बल्की एक शिक्षक बनने के बजाय एक इंजीनियर बनता।
  • Priya would rather purpose me than him.
    प्रिया बल्की उसके बजाय मुझे purpose करती।

(6) would rather be /would be rather + V4

  • I would rather be a teacher.
    में बल्की एक शिक्षक होता।
  • I would rather be your friend.
    में बल्की तुम्हारा दोस्त होता।
  • He would be rather studying than playing.
    वह खेलने के बजाय पढ़ रहा होगा।

(7) would rather have/would rather have + V3

  • I would rather have a Lamborghini car.
    मेरे पास बल्की एक लेम्बोर्गिनी कार होती/होगी।
  • I would rather have lots of money.
    मेरे पास बल्की बहुत सरे पैसे होते/होगी।
  • He would have rather called Ram than Shyam.
    बजाय श्याम के वह राहुल को कॉल कर चुका होगा या होता।
  • He would have rather done his homework than playing cricket.
    वह क्रिकेट खेलने के बजाय अपना होमवर्क कर चुका होगा/ होता ।
  • He would have rather called Rahul than she.
    वह राहुल को कॉल करने के बजाय उसको कर चुका होगा।होता।
