In spite of and despite express a contrast between two things. They are prepositional expressions and are followed by a noun, noun phrases, pronouns, verb in -ing forms, or any equivalent of nouns. Both prepositional expressions can be replaced with each other; however, there is a minor difference between them (In spite of and Despite).
